About this book

I am a classically trained cellist with a master's degree and twelve years of conservatory discipline. I can identify a note's frequency by ear. I can hear the acoustic properties of a room before I see the furniture. I have spent my entire adult life studying what makes music work at a molecular level.

None of that mattered when the mechanic stood up and sang Wilson Pickett.

He was over six feet tall, built like he had spent decades lifting heavy things because the job required it, and he sang "In the Midnight Hour" with all the technical refinement of a cement mixer and all the conviction of a man who did not care who was watching. His pitch wandered. His timing was loose. His voice had been used hard for decades and he had never once asked the tiles in his shower to judge his intonation.

My chest did something I could not explain with a music degree.

His name was Frank. He was a mechanic. He smelled like soap and motor oil and the particular warmth of a man who scrubbed hard after work and still carried traces of the work in places scrubbing could not reach.

I went to the bar. I sat down next to him. And I told him his speaking voice resonated at the same frequency as the lowest string on my cello.

Some conversations start with a note you were not expecting and do not resolve the way the score suggests.
